This was trance, not as many of us know it today, something new, something different. Not the repetitive Harthouse stuff. Something almost And that was what Oakenfold did, he made trance accessible, dare I say, commercial. Trance for the masses. And as much as most Americans will poo-poo trance these days, it was a huge movement made possible by DJs like Oakenfold, and later Sasha and Digweed, when they jumped on the wave.
Fromand into today, some of the most amazing, mind-blowing music was being produced and played in clubs all around the world, and a lot of that is owed to Oakey's Goa Mix. I'm not a big fan of the guy; I hate his productions; and I think his DJ'ing skills are shiite. But, respect must be given where respect is due.
However, it is the foundation upon which much of dance music, or even today's pop music, is constructed. These were Evolution - Paul Oakenfold - The Goa Mix (Cassette) influences, Evolution - Paul Oakenfold - The Goa Mix (Cassette), the pioneers, the trailblazers.
Give them their due. That said, compared to the original, sound quality is much much better. It really is like a brand new mix, and there are some new tracks inserted. And true to Oakenfold style, it's somewhat shoddily constructed and not exactly well thought out.
The placement of the Saint Etienne track is somewhat baffling. But, I'm glad to see the Dayglo mix of Floor Essence is still intact. Still, the essence of the original is still there, as are the Blade Runner samples, a novelty at the time. I suppose the cynical part of me will question the re-release of this mix, just as some questioned the anniversary release of Renaissance. Maybe Oakey's snorted too much of his money and needed some scratch.
But, there's no denying the history lesson this mix will provide to those who are willing to learn. The goa mix never got an official release as the purpose of it was to be broadcast on Radio 1 and didn't need to bother with licensing issues.
When Cream released it in their shop it wasn't fully legal like a typical commercial DJ mix cd is these days because there was no licensing involved for each record in the mix. This new release from was the first time the goa mix got a fully legal and official commercial release.
It isn't the original cut of the goa mix that Oakenfold did in though, the whole thing has been redone, but is still for the most part based around the structure of the original goa mix. The mixing in between each of the records is fresh with new transitions, some of the pieces have been covered by the Perfecto Symphony Orchestra, and some of the original records weren't used while some new records have been included.
Evolution - Paul Oakenfold - The Goa Mix (Cassette) arrangement of the whole mix has been slightly rearranged as well. Overall it's a fresh take on the goa mix, and if you've heard the original goa mix, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with this new release of it! This re-release seems to catch Oakenfold in a transition phase between his earlier Dragonfly psy-trance work and the later more melodic releases like "Residence" which is in my opinion truly deserving of the "legendary" status that was too easily bestowed on this release"Travelling" and "Another World".
In my view the album suffers for it, as it somehow seems to lack cohesion - there are too many interludes stunning as they are, such as the excerpts from the "Blade Runner" soundtrack which just don't fit in with the psy-edged material which still dominates. In all, the mix may have been innovative and groundbreaking at the time and it certainly does showcase Oakie's distinctive influences and tendenciesbut that makes it primarily an item of nostalgia for those who went to Goa in the 90's, and mainly of historical interest for those of us who didn't.
See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. I never heard the mix first time around and I wondered what the fuss was about. Now I know. This is an excellent piece of music which although getting old still sounds absolutely class. Buy it and if you where into dance around this period get ready to get excited whenever you realize that you loved all the tracks the first time you just didn't know the names.
Top tune for me is, 'Man with no name - Floor Essence'. It just gets repeated over and over. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Classic from the man who opened my eyes to the classical genre for the future. Oaky the legend.
It would be difficult to expand on all of the positive reviews of this album that are available already, it is a great album, if you are thinking about buying it I would definitely say yes, the packaging was extremely nice and was delivered as specified.
Great product and service. This is Oakey at his best. I heard the original Goa Mix on Radio 1 years ago and it is one of the best ever trance experiences in existence to date It is not 'Goa' indian techno style trance so dont get it if thats what you are after.
It is in Evolution - Paul Oakenfold - The Goa Mix (Cassette) best trance tradition of the s and is just sheer class. Great product and prompt delivery.

So, it's basically a retrospective take on his '94 mix, rather than a re-recorded issuing of the exact same set? In the end, he traded life for sand. Afari, Tales. Southern fucking sun does not go in the Goa Mix. What is this shit?
Great business move but yeah, it'll probably be worthless. Originally posted by K4SP4 good job, will update your tracklist asap Originally posted by Demoted Audrey Gallagher sounds like a hive of pissed off vacuum cleaners.
