AllFrumTha i's self titled debut is nothing short of slammin. The album is Ice Cube / Mack 10 - Greed / Get Yo Bang On (Vinyl) core G-Funk.
Too bad there weren't more songs on this 14 track album 4 of them being inserts. This album is one of the best late 90's rap albums out there. Classic west coast album If you consider yourself versed in west coast hiphop this is a must.
It's been said that West Coast gangsta rap extends like a big family tree, and whether or not you Ice Cube / Mack 10 - Greed / Get Yo Bang On (Vinyl), AllFrumTha I makes a good case for it.
You could start back at gangsta rap forefathers N. Not only are they vocally identical to their WSCG brethren and exhibiting the same style, but the production also bears the same dark, snaky, mechanical, rumbling upbeat beats of the lates post g-funk sound prevalent in these years. Still, it does sound good, as the beats and rhymes both hit hard and succeed as trunk rattlers. The best song is "Caps," a street anthem with spooky instrumentals.
Fans of Mack 10 will really enjoy "AllFrumTha I" and their slick, straightforward gangsta rap, but others may find it too familiar as not much stands out. In any event, it's an enjoyable listen if not an unforgettable one.
Yo, Man! Mack 10 aka Mack Dime produced it, so it is always gonna be influenced by him, which in case of this album is to the best effect. And yes, it is better than Westside Connection! This is ganstarap at its truely best. Ofcourse, the I is for Inglewood, which we are constantly reminded of throughout.
Allfrumtha I have something really hot going on here and I could not recommend this album no less - it is impressive throughout. This is a phat album, no doubt. Mack 10 produced it, so it is always gonna be influenced by him, which in case of this album is to the best effect.
Whereas the Westside Connection CD is not made up entirely of hits, this is well, almost. The highlights are "Fill My Cup", which features a phat chorus; then, Allfrumtha I teams up with Mack 10 on "Get Yo Bang On" to produce a classic gangsta track, before "Caps" take you by storm, which Ice Cube / Mack 10 - Greed / Get Yo Bang On (Vinyl), is my favorite; and "Guess Who" is sure to make a few people praise themselves for buying this fab album.
See all reviews from the United States. During the mid-'90s, when West Coast rap reigned supreme, Mack 10 emerged as a close associate of Ice Cube and enjoyed several years of considerable commercial success before his popularity faded toward the end of the decade. Mack 10's fortunes began to fade with The Paper Routehis first album to fall short of either platinum or gold sales status, and his first to not spawn a significant hit.
Bang or Ballreleased by Cash Money Records, signaled a new direction for Mack 10, though it too failed to rival the commercial success of his mid- to late-'90s output. In subsequent years, he jumped back and forth from independent to major-label status and struggled to re-establish himself in a substantially altered rap marketplace where West Coast gangsta rap had fallen out of favor.
The album proved very popular, spawning a pair of chart hits "Bow Down," "Gangstas Make the World Go Round"peaking at number two on the Billboardand ultimately going platinum. His second solo album, Based on a True Storycontinued the streak of commercial success, charting at number 14 and spawning a Top 40 hit, "Backyard Boogie. The Paper Route followed and, though it charted fairly well initially, at number 19 relative to number 15, the peak position of its predecessorover time it proved considerably less popular than any of Mack 10's previous releases.
The partnership was surprising. Cash Money was a leading Dirty South label with a small roster of in-house rappers such as Juvenile and Lil Wayne; however, the label was looking to expand its roster as well as its geographical reach, and Mack 10 offered it a great opportunity to unite the West Coast and Dirty South. The resulting album, Bang or Ball Ice Cube / Mack 10 - Greed / Get Yo Bang On (Vinyl), certainly signaled a new direction for Mack 10, who sounded comfortable working with Cash Money's in-house producer, Manny Fresh.
Even with major-label promotion and a strong lead single, "Like This" featuring Nate DoggHustla's Handbook climbed to only number 65 on the Billboard ; with the exception of its independently released precedessor which didn't even break the Topthis was Mack 10's lowest-charting album to date and didn't bode well for his major-label future.
