Although referring to many different species, some share a point of origin, and traits. They are supernatural creatures with extraordinary strength and powers and abilities.
They commonly prey upon humans. These are the monsters that were confirmed to be created by Eve. These are the supreme monsters, due to them being the very first of their species, which means they greatly outclass all of their children in terms of strength and abilities no matter how powerful their children are.
They are very rare, which means the majority of hunters have never met one, nor will ever. The fate of most is unknown following Crowley 's hunt for Alphas and through them, Purgatory.
These monsters are of the strongest type under the Alphaseither by being physically stronger than the rest, have extremely powerful abilities or are so unique Monsters it is hard for hunters to hunt them.
These are creatures that have been featured as monsters-of-the-week but have an unknown origin and are unconfirmed to be descendants of Eve. Alphas are the first of each monster, and the direct descendants of Eve. As a result, each one is more powerful than any other member of their species. They are the creators of the rest of their species, and as such are the undisputed leaders of their kind.
Although many monsters are solitary, some, particularly the intelligent ones, form groups or packs, where they live and hunt together in "nests". Pack leaders serve as the bosses of these groups.
This is not always a definite rule however, as some prefer to live on their own as well. Monsters are made in a great variety of ways. While this is not a complete list, it shows some of the more common methods of monster reproduction. The original and most effective method is by tactile contact with Evethe mother of all. She had the ability to turn humans into monsters or hybrids with a mere touch.
The most common method, is however simply be sexual reproduction between monsters, which Djinn's, Kitsune, Ghouls, Vetala and presumably all other monsters, whose method hasn't been stated do.
Werewolves mostly reproduce by biting, but they can also reproduce sexually with other werewolves. While exceptionally rare, its possible for a monster transformation to be reversed. Monsters have hunted men since the beginning of time. Eve created the first monsters, the Alphaswho in turn went on to father the rest of their species. Although powerful at least in the modern eramost monsters preferred to hide from humans or blend into their society, taking great care to avoid detection, especially by hunters.
Because most of them could assume human form, they could easily pass as a regular human to the untrained eye. Many monsters targeted isolated locations and communities as their hunting grounds. In some cases, they would attempt to reproduce, in addition to simply hunting men for food. Following the beginning of Crowley 's search for Purgatory through torturing monsters, Eve reached out to her children and ordered them to begin increasing their numbers to protect Purgatory's location.
Eve also desired to condemn as many human souls to Purgatory as possible to deny them to Heaven or Hell. As a result of Eve's influence, monsters began acting far more strangely in the eyes of hunters, such as werewolves not transforming at the full moon. One of the tactics that Eve employed was, through the Alphasordering the existing monster species to build up armies.

Samantha and Andrew kiss before they are rushed into different vehicles. The chronological ending takes place at the beginning of the film, filmed in green night vision sight, when the military rescue team is attacked by a single creature.
While attending university inEdwards made a short monster movie set in suburbia. He initially wanted to expand on that idea, but after the release of War of the Worldshe believed it was "not going to be special anymore". Considering that the film would have to be low-budget, Edwards decided to embrace the found footage style of The Blair Witch Projectand mix that element with his original concept, Monsters.
After learning about Cloverfield 's similar premise, he abandoned this idea and moved on to a concept where a "war [is] going on somewhere on the other side of the world, and no one cares". Edwards conceived the film while watching some fishermen struggling to haul in their net and imagining a monster inside of it.
He had the idea to make a monster movie set "years after most other monster movies end, when people aren't running and screaming, but life is going on" and "where a giant, dead sea Monsters is considered completely normal". Edwards pitched his idea to Vertigo Filmswhere producer James Richardson asked him to watch In Search of a Midnight Kiss for an example of low-budget filmmaking. Edwards was impressed by McNairy but wanted a real couple to portray the lead characters.
He changed his mind after meeting them and cast them both. For instance, the film was shot using digital video cameras rather than the more expensive 35mm film and was edited on a laptop computer.
Every night after shooting, editor Colin Goudie and his assistant Justin Hall would download the footage so the memory sticks could be cleared and ready for the next day. The original cut was over four hours long but was trimmed to 94 minutes after eight months of editing. He and the film's producers disagreed about the placement, so he decided to put the chronological ending of the film at the beginning and end the film immediately after Andrew and Samantha kiss.
Edwards created the visual effects himself using off-the-shelf Adobe software, ZBrushand Autodesk 3ds Max. He had five months to create all visual effects shots, a process he undertook in his bedroom.
He produced two shots a day until he reached the first creature shot, when "suddenly two months went by and [he] still hadn't finished a single creature shot"; Edwards stated that the creatures' visual effects were the most challenging element of production. Due to time constraints, the sound effects had to be produced before the visual effects. Vue Entertainment and Cineworld Cinemas set up 'infected locations' which gave users access to exclusive Monsters content and the chance to win random on-the-spot prizes.
Hours after the film's screening at South by Southwest, Magnet Releasing acquired the distribution rights in the United States. Tom Quinn, an executive at Magnet, stated that they "were blown away by Monsters " and were "thrilled to bring his vision to American audiences.
The film was released in the United Kingdom on 3 December The film was released in North America on 29 October Monsters received generally positive reviews from critics.
The site's critics consensus reads, "It doesn't quite live up to its intriguing premise, but Monsters is a surprising blend of alien-invasion tropes, political themes, and relationship drama. Roger Ebert awarded the film three and a half out of four stars, praising its focus on "characters, relationships, fear and mostly unseen menace" rather than its visual effects, as well as the acting.
He also commended Edwards for "evoking He also praised the visual effects, Edwards' cinematography, and the "simmering" chemistry between McNairy and Able, concluding that the film was "both shoestring and sci-fi filmmaking at its best".
He criticised the "tentative" and "alienating" performances of McNairy and Able, but stated that "the overall picture still impresses". Conversely, Ty Burr of the Boston Globe gave the film a mixed review, granting it two and a half stars out of five. Though he praised the score, he stated that it is "more fascinating for its ambitions than for what it accomplishes" and criticised the main characters for being "too shallow" and unengaging.
