As soon as you thought 'ah there's a good track', the album would bounce to a different, less appealing genre. If wasn't bad, but he had a penchant for sounding fussy, occasionally almost feminine. That characteristic was only underscored by some of the Left Banke-styled classical arrangements. That was unfortunate since he had a far tougher and enjoyable facet to his voice that occasionally Eleuthera - Bert Sommer - Inside Bert Sommer (Vinyl me a bit of The Guess Who's Burton Cummings check out 'The Other Side'.
Backed with a full rock band arrangement, the lyrics may have been a bit dated, but the Eleuthera - Bert Sommer - Inside Bert Sommer (Vinyl rocked with considerable energy. Easy to see why it was tapped as a single. The abrupt transitions were jarring, but overall the song was quite commercial and the track demonstrated the tougher side of Sommer's voice. Well that's the plotline on ' The Grand Pianist'. Musically the song had a pseudo-classical feel that actually reminded me a bit of something out of The Left Banke catalog Mike Brown played on this one as well.
The 'Zip Zap;' segment of the medley only last a moment, but was actually side one's most catchy moment. His cover didn't really mess with the original arrangement, but at least to my ears it sounded like Donovan doing the song with a bad sinus infection.
Slowing the track way down had the effect of putting the emphasis on Simon's pity party lyrics LP Sommer's strained vocals. It may have been a big hit at Woodstock, but I'd rather hear the Simon and Garfunkel original any day of the week.
Nice thoughts and once the track got going it was actually quite good - good enough for you to overlook the utopian lyrics, though the flute solo wasn't really necessary. The somewhat abrupt faded out left the impression there was a much longer studio jam version. InSommer joined Michael Brown's band, The Left Bankeas lead singer, replacing Steve Martin and co-writing their single "And Suddenly" with Brown, but the group soon fell apart following legal threats by Martin's lawyers.
Sommer also wrote "Brink of Death", recorded by the Eleuthera - Bert Sommer - Inside Bert Sommer (Vinyl Childe Harold. Shortly afterwards, he was recruited as a cast member of the musical Hairsoon being promoted to the role of Woof. His "frizzed-out Afro" hair and eyes featured on the playbill for Hair in He was signed by Capitol Recordsand in June released his first album, The Road to Travelproduced by Artie Kornfeld as were his next two albums.
Kornfeld's involvement with the Woodstock Festival led to Sommer being invited to perform there. He was the third act to perform on the opening Friday, August 15, Album), However, because he was signed to a rival record labela recording of his performance was not made publicly available until Sommer's second album, Inside Bert Sommerwas released in May on the Eleuthera label, a subsidiary of Buddah Recordsand featured the single "We're All Playing in the Same Band", which he wrote  at,  for, and about the Woodstock festival,  about his experience there,  reaching number 48 on the Hot in September While Sommer continued to write songs, he returned to acting.
After being encouraged to audition by music producer Artie Ripphe appeared as "Flatbush" of Kaptain Kool and the Kongs on The Krofft Supershow inbut did not reprise the role in the second season.
Inhis fourth album, also titled Bert Sommerproduced in Los Angeles by Ron Dantewas released by Capitol Recordsbut was again unsuccessful and he was dropped by the label. He also continued to record demos in the hope of getting a record deal; one track, "You", was featured in the films The Patriot and Stella. Sommer died in Troy, New York on July 23,after a long battle with a respiratory illness.
