HEK 23 Feb 15 Bass. Beneath Two Moons. It comes after Hodge's off the wall experiments with Peder Mannerfelt, and feels like the Bristol producer is happy to go down the dance floor route with renewed vigour. The title track is a robust tribal affair, with cymbals crashing and droning sounds rising up through the ether, while on "There is a Storm Coming", he uses an ominous bass in tandem with waves of nightmarish synths to create the effect that the track's title suggests.
Exogenesis EP. Holographic Prose EP. It's a sign that he is still broadening as an artist, and certainly "Holographic Prose" speaks to that perspective with its cyclical synth lines and subtle staccato beats calling to mind krautrock more than the swinging, garage infusions he was first appearing with.
BH 46 02 Feb 18 Techno. Livity Sound Recordings. There's an exotic thread at the core of both tracks, with the title track in particular ramping up the tension with an ostentatious breakdown that loops a vocal cry over tumbling percussion before dropping down into a magnificently limber bass led throwdown. No Single Thing.
Ghost Of Akina Rainbow Edition. Amor Fati Remixes. The label boss himself takes "Amor Fati" by Hodge to task, and turns out a delicately poised but satisfyingly weighty version replete with twinkling synth lines and jagged rhythmic incantations. Hodge meanwhile gets to have some fun with Bruce's "Tilikum", and weaves an emotional techno variation out of the component parts that stands amongst his most impassioned works to date, thanks in no small part to the heart-rending sweeps of chord that blanket the peak of the track.
If I Could Stop. Clone Basement Series Holland. CBS 08 Dec 17 Techno. It is mainly about the Young Echo affiliated Ishan Sound here, who on "C5" collaborates with local scene hero Hodge for a moody downbeat affair, featuring spooky horror movie synth textures over booming kicks and trap snares.
He then joins forces with the affectionately known Alex Muttley - a rising star on the local scene who lends his studio talents to the equally compelling "Still Smoking". Featuring more grime elements this time around, for this wobby and splintered basement jam that's guaranteed to get some lighters up in the air. TEC 27 Apr 18 Bass. DJ-Kicks unmixed Tracks. Griffit Vigo - "A. Listening to this, the 68th instalment of DJ-Kicks, the answer is a resounding 'yes'.
It moves from the abstract chimes of her own "Public Art" to the bruising rhythms of Stallone the Reducer and Red Axes' low-slung electro into the next-wave Detroit techno of Fit Siegel and the bleary European sound of Dario Zenker, representing here with "Koraimer Bro". However, Halo is also aware that to understand where electronic music is going to, you must first understand its past - and the inclusion of tracks from Jeff Mills' Final Cut band and Blake Baxter's catalogue showcases her deep knowledge and passion.
Max Cooper. Emergence Remixed. As Untitled - DJ Tonio - Curser EP (Vinyl) expect, many of the reworks are dancefloor focused, with Vessels, Joe Farr whose distorted, industrial-tinged techno take on "Panned" is a definite highlight and techno veteran John Tejada all delivering standout interpretations. These fine remixes are accompanied by similarly impressive rubs that don't strive as hard for club plays, with Hidden Orchestra's symphonic version of "Symmetry" and Tom Hodge's intricate, melodious rework of "Cyclic" standing out.
It's the story of how "everything comes from almost nothing," using knowledge, theories and insights gained from his previous role as a geneticist. Cooper weaves a together a fascinating auditory experience here, his second album since 's Human, covering a variety of sonic moods in his now signature way. Take for instance "Trust" featuring the lovely vocals of Kathrin deBoer and a bit of help from good studio mate Tom Hodge; here jazzy drum and bass arrives via field recordings and classical aesthetics in wonderful harmony.
Also, the deep, multi layered and ethereal Untitled - DJ Tonio - Curser EP (Vinyl) track "Waves" sees Cooper on point, as usual, until "Cyclic" goes for something a bit more ferocious on this broken beat techno exercise where inventive use of sampling and sound design collide with perfect tension and suspense. Yearning For The Infinite.
Yearning for the Infinite follows Cooper's LP One Hundred Billion Sparks which comes through a commission that the Barbican Centre gave Max Cooper in being able to present a live audiovisual show in an attempt to capture what he defines as 'the overwhelming vastness of infinity' within Kulturquartier's "Betonhalle".
Much like Nils Frahm, Max Cooper hits on many a sweet note when venturing through his own interpretation of liminality, arriving with the sound of fizzing electronics and the hum of hardware, to field recordings, live drums and emotionally affecting synths lines. A trip from start to finish. There's a real energy about A-side "Second Freeze", which slowly builds on waves of punchy, polyrhythmic percussion and creepy noises, before bringing in a similarly bold and speaker-hugging bassline.
The talented duo goes ever further in this African-influenced direction of thrillingly percussive flipside "Simple As", where additional drum hits pepper a dense, polyrhythmic groove.
It's one of the best drum records we've heard this year, and that's saying something. Countdown To Sound Gizmo Audio US, Untitled - DJ Tonio - Curser EP (Vinyl). Splits Acre then gets crazy on the synthesis with 'Don't Get Me Started' and Etch gets swampy on 'Toxin', before Hodge's 'X' provides us with some futuristic tech treats.
We then round up the EP in style with two belters, as Wen supplies the eerie fire on 'Late Night' and Facta strips it back to bass and drums in the vibrancy of 'Poliwhirl'. The Midnight Manual. Tyree Glenn Jr. Soul Brothers Inc. George E. Teecain - "Brudermuehl No. Tech You Very Much! In Death's Dream Kingdom. Reverse Vol 1. After the previous Livity Sound original and remix compilations, now the 'reverse' label has its own collection, bringing focus on a host of producers who are now reaching Untitled - DJ Tonio - Curser EP (Vinyl) in their own right.
From the recent thrill of Simo Cell to Hodge's first outing on the imprint, via Bruce, Batu and Alex Coulton, this is as strong a statement of cutting edge UK soundsystem electronics as you could wish for. In the years that have passed, dubstep has mutated, and so has Punch Drunk, with the classic dubstep sound giving way to something equally as likely to feature elements of house, techno and experimental music.
